The road to one of the country's top five tourist destinations, Totaranui, has reopened after severe slips closed the road in December.

The only access into Totaranui since December 17 has been by boat.

The New Zealand Transport Agency funded the final cost of the project totalling just under $700,000, well below the 1.2 million that it was originally expected to cost.

Fulton Hogan workers have spent more than 4000 hours of labour into fixing the road and moved nearly 100,000 cubic metres of soil.

Some parts of the unsealed windy road are still only one lane.
